If you're having a problem with your toilet or sewerage system, follow the simple steps below:

Step 1: Identify the source of the problem

If your internal fixtures (taps, toilets) have an odour, are slow to drain or are making a gurgling sound, you may have a blockage or another problem in your private plumbing.
Use the troubleshooting guide below in Step 2 to assist you with your issue.
If you cannot resolve the issue, we recommend you call a licensed plumber to investigate. Unitywater does not conduct private plumbing repairs - they are the responsibility of the property owner.
If the problem is on public property or coming from sewer pipes which Unitywater is responsible for maintaining and repairing, please report it immediately by calling us on 1300 086 489 (24 hours).

Sewage overflows usually occur during times of significant wet weather. During times like these, sewage is likely to be heavily diluted with stormwater.

When there is persistent heavy rain or a flood event, large volumes of stormwater often get into the sewerage system. This happens due to run-off or incorrect piping that channels stormwater into the sewer. At times like this, sewage can discharge through manholes and other overflow points.

We strongly advise all residents and visitors to stay out of flood-affected waters during and after a storm, as the water may contain snags, sharp objects, stormwater-diluted sewage, chemical waste, fallen powerlines and wildlife.
